On the banks of the Haruki river, a tributary of the larger Kishida river, boils Yumura Onsen, one of Japan's leading high-temperature hot springs (onsen). It is said that this hot spring was discovered approximately 1150 years ago in the first year of the Kashou Era (848 BCE), by Jikaku Taishi. About 470L of 98˚ celcius water boils forth from the source of this hot spring named "Arayu."
Yumura Onsen, which was founded during the Heian Period (848 BCE), is a hot spring (onsen) in which nature and culture have remained in tact from the olden days. Why don't you "immerse" yourself in Japan's culture at this historical hot spring town.
Situated in the northwestern portion of Hyogo prefecture, on the San'in coastline, and bordering Tottori prefecture, Yumura Onsen is surrounded by nature. To the south there is the nationally designated Hyonosen-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National park, several mountains centered around Mt. Ouginosen, the Ueyama-Hataganaru highlands, and hidden away by a young forest of Japanese beech and horse chestnut trees, Kirigatake falls and Komatagawa valley.
